What is a Burning Man Regional Contact?
A Burning Man Regional Contact (RC) is a dedicated volunteer who serves as a bridge between Burning Man Project and local Burner communities around the world. RCs embody the ethos and culture of Burning Man in their regions, helping to cultivate thriving, year-round communities that embrace and celebrate the Ten Principles of Burning Man.
The Role of a Regional Contact
Regional Contacts are leaders, facilitators, and connectors. Their primary focus is to support and inspire local community members to bring Burning Man culture to life throughout the year. This role varies depending on the needs and dynamics of each community but generally involves:
Community Building and Connection
RCs actively bring people together by organizing casual meetups, town hall discussions, workshops, or orientations for new participants. They foster connections, encourage collaboration, and support those who want to lead and create projects. Their goal is to help the community flourish by providing guidance, amplifying efforts, and facilitating connections.
Facilitating Local Initiatives
RCs inspire creativity and participation, creating a supportive environment where community members can turn their own ideas into reality. They are not expected to organize every event or project themselves but serve as guides and resources—offering advice, connecting people with shared interests, and encouraging participants to take leadership roles. This approach fosters a culture of participation and shared responsibility, empowering community members to take ownership of the projects and events they want to see.
Communication and Representation
As a communication link between the Burning Man organization and their local community, RCs share important news, updates, and opportunities. They ensure local Burners are aware of global initiatives and ways to get involved, while also relaying their community’s unique needs and interests back to the Regional Network team. This feedback loop ensures regional voices are heard and helps Burning Man Project shape programs and initiatives that resonate with Burners everywhere.
Volunteer Leadership and Personal Growth
RCs are not selected solely for their current leadership skills but also their potential and desire to grow and develop as leaders. They are passionate volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to supporting their communities, learning and evolving as they guide others. This commitment to personal growth helps them better serve their communities while embodying the spirit of lifelong learning that is core to the Burning Man ethos.
Adaptability to Community Needs
The role of an RC varies widely depending on the size, maturity, and interests of their community. In some regions, community members may have a strong interest in producing large-scale regional events, while in others, the focus may be more on social gatherings or community service activities. RCs adapt their approach to fit the character and needs of their local communities.
Advocacy and Guidance
RCs advocate for Burning Man culture and values, helping to create participatory and inclusive experiences. They answer questions about Burning Man’s principles, provide guidance to new members, and ensure that everyone is welcomed and informed.

Who are Regional Contacts?
Regional Contacts (RCs) represent a diverse cross-section of the global community. They are self-nominated volunteers who participate in a thoughtful review process with both their local community and Burning Man Project. This process ensures that each RC is genuinely committed, responsible, and aligned with the values of Burning Man.
RCs may serve as part of a team of co-RCs, where their unique skills, interests, and other qualities are considered to create a well-rounded and effective team. This collaborative approach ensures that the team can best support and engage their local community.
Regional Contacts come from all walks of life, reflecting a multitude of ages, races, genders, nationalities, and backgrounds. Burning Man is committed to embracing diversity and practicing radical inclusion, making sure that Regional Contacts embody these principles in their roles. Whether they’re veteran Burners or relative newcomers to the culture, RCs share a common passion for fostering creativity, facilitating connections, and nurturing a thriving year-round Burning Man community.
