Our theme: Masqueraiders
This year we give birth to a new concept and invite Decompression to become Masqueraiders, a term uniting the creative power of masquerades and deception with the mischievous immediacy of a ‘raid’, to collectively transform The Cause into another spectacular one-night event.
Considering the wide range of needs from theme camps to art projects and decor teams, we are suggesting three initial lenses through which you can explore this year’s theme:
The first lens, rooted in drag and queer performance, invites participants to subvert gender roles and embrace fluidity, perhaps using the face as a tool to amplify, distort or reject fixed identities, celebrating artistic freedom and destabilising rigid gender binaries.
The second lens focuses on the figurative meaning of ‘masquerade’, inviting the creation of deception, illusion and disguise whilst delving into themes of authenticity and hidden layers of identity.
The third lens invites you to explore the global masquerade traditions, beyond the Venetian, to consider the events and creations from the neolithic spirit-channelling masks and Slavic winter festivities to the carnivals around the world that connect participants to ancestry, community and mythology.
